The promise
What we can see.
Everything in Chase Memories is recorded, transcribed and read on your iPhone. Nothing you record is sent anywhere to be transcribed. This page says what changes when you turn on backup, and what we can see then.
Without backup
The app sends nothing anywhere. Recording, transcription, the words read from photos, titles and summaries all happen on the device, with the phone's own models. The app runs no analytics and sends nothing to us. Because your memories live on the phone, they are included in the phone's own iCloud or computer backup the way any app's data is, except video files, which are left out to spare the space.
If you turn on backup
Encrypted on your iPhone before backup. The key stays with you, in your Apple keychain, never on our servers. We can't listen to, read or hand over what we can't decrypt.
Each memory is sealed on your iPhone with a key of its own, and that key is sealed with your account key. The account key is made on your iPhone and kept in your Apple keychain, which carries it to your other devices through iCloud Keychain. The server stores what it is given: ciphertext, with no key to open it.
What we can see
We can see your email or Apple relay address, subscription status, how many encrypted items you have, their sizes and timestamps, and IP addresses.
In more detail, the server holds, per account: the addresses you sign in with; the names you gave your devices; whether Pro is on, from Apple; for each backed-up memory, an id, the time it was last edited, which device edited it and the sizes of its sealed files; and the ordinary request logs of any server, with IP addresses, kept briefly. It holds no title, no words, no audio, no picture it can read.
What we cannot do
- We cannot listen to, read, search, or hand over your memories. We hold no key.
- We cannot recover a backup for you if every device is lost, iCloud Keychain is off and you kept no recovery code. Nobody can. The app offers the recovery code to everyone who turns backup on, and says this at the time.
- We do not use your content for anything, because we cannot see it. We run no analytics and no trackers, and sell nothing about you.
What we never say
We never say "never leaves your phone" about backup, "we can recover your data", or "anonymous", and nothing here should suggest that other people will not know they are being recorded. The phone shows that it is recording; telling people is on you.
Deleting
Deleting a memory puts it in Recently Deleted for 30 days, on every device, and it can be put back from any of them. After that, or when you erase it now, it goes from your devices, and the server removes its sealed files at its next sweep. Deleting your account removes the backup and the account's records, and Apple is told to end your sign-in with Apple. Your memories on the phone stay.
